Scattered across the rugged hills and silent villages of Mani, the tower houses (pyrgospita) are a symbol of strength, pride, and history. Built mainly between the 17th and 19th centuries, these tall, narrow, stone structures were not just homes – they were fortresses, family symbols, and declarations of independence.

A living monument of Mani’s past
The Maniots were fierce warriors, often involved in local feuds and resisting Ottoman rule. To protect their families, each clan built its own tower, some rising up to four or five stories high, with small windows and battlements. These towers still stand today, like silent sentinels watching over the land.

Where to see them
Some of the most impressive towers can be found in villages like Vatheia, where dozens of towers rise from the rocky slopes, forming a ghost-like, medieval skyline. In Areopoli, many towers have been restored and now serve as homes, guesthouses, or museums. Kitta, Nomia, and Gerolimenas also boast stunning examples.

Towers today
Many of these architectural gems have been restored with care, turning into guesthouses or cultural spaces, offering visitors a unique stay surrounded by history. Walking among them, you don’t just see stone walls – you feel the stories they hold.
